A&E’s recent reality show “Obsessed” has focused attention not only on OCD but also on the show’s therapists’ use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy principals to treat this disorder.  The show’s primary therapeutic focus has been on the technique of “exposure” and the dramatic “breakthroughs” that seem to have been achieved by the use of this technique.  What is “Exposure and Response Prevention” and how is this powerful technique applied?  Are there any dangers in the use of this technique?  Despite its frequency of occurrence in clinical practice and the fact that effective treatments have been established for it, OCD is still a poorly recognized and inexpertly treated disorder.  Clinical trials have established that both CBT and medications separately and together have efficacy for this disorder but in order to maximize clinical effect the clinician needs to have an understanding of this disorder in its myriad presentations as well as an understanding of how to apply the therapy, whether it be psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy.
