Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can follow exposure to a traumatic event such as sexual or physical assault, witnessing a death, the unexpected death of a loved one, or a natural disaster. There are three main types of symptoms associated with PTSD:
- “Reliving” of the traumatic event (such as flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive images)
- Avoidance behaviors (such as avoiding places and reminders related to the trauma) and emotional numbing (such as detachment from others, substance abuse)
- Physiological arousal (such as difficulty sleeping, irritability, or poor concentration.
