Psychology and TV! CBT SoCal’s Kristin Howard, LMFT and Dr. Jason von Stietz start an IGTV Series

We live in what many describe as a new Golden Age of Television. There are numerous cable channels and streaming services with critically acclaimed and award winning shows. Many of these shows have compelling characters and storylines that are rich with psychological underpinnings. CBT SoCal’s Kristin Howard, LMFT and Dr. Jason von Stietz are excited to launch a new Instagram TV (IGTV) series entitled Psychology and TV! Each week they will meet via Instagram to discuss the psychology behind hit TV shows.
This week, they recorded their first episode in which they discuss episode 1 of Netflix’s Unorthodox. They discussed the main character, Esty, and her journey as she leaves behind the orthodox Jewish community to find her own path in life. They discussed the power imbalance between males and females in Esty’s life. They discussed Esty’s struggles to find her identity, first in the orthodox community, and next as she tries to find a new life for herself. Kristin and Dr. von Stietz also discuss the intergenerational trauma passed down to Esty by her grandmother, who was a German citizen and a holocaust survivor. Finally, they discuss how they would use CBT to address the possible mental health issues that appeared in the first episode.
