Dr. Jason von Stietz is the official sport psychology provider of the U.S. National Sumo Wrestling Team

CBT SoCal’s Dr. Jason von Stietz is now partnering with the United States Sumo Federation to provide sport psychology services to the U.S. National Sumo Wrestling team. Dr. von Stietz has already worked with individual Team USA sumo wrestlers, one of which was discussed in a previous article. Dr. von Stietz plans to meet with the national team to hold team building and mental skills trainings via video calls. National team athletes would also have the option of individual sport psychology consultations. Dr. von Stietz plans to help the sumo wrestlers to perform at their best by helping them to focus under pressure, develop pre-performance routines, and by helping them to connect training routines to their core personal values.
Sumo wrestling, the Japanese national sport, is emerging as a popular and competitive sport in the U.S. as well as many other countries around the world. Dr. von Stietz was first exposed to sumo wrestling when attending the U.S. Sumo open in 2017 (pictured above), which is the largest sumo competition outside of Japan. After feeling amazed by the athleticism and skill of the sumo wrestlers, Dr. von Stietz briefly trained with the U.S. Sumo Club. Dr. von Stietz was able to observe and train alongside national champions, a former professional sumo wrestler, and on one occasion a multiple time world champion. Dr. von Stietz is excited to play a role in the success of these amazing athletes.
