  • Dr. Jason von Stietz presents on mental health and sport psychology among NCAA student athletes

CBT SoCal’s Dr. Jason von Stietz, recently hosted an educational event at Whittier College for the Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) Sport Psychology Special Interest Group. The event was attended by therapists, applied sport psychology practitioners, university administrators, undergraduate and graduate students, and members of the local community. Dr. von Stietz discussed the mental health needs of NCAA student-athletes at the Division III level. He discussed efforts by the Whittier College Counseling Center to address those needs through it’s role in providing mental health screeners for all student-athletes, providing consultations for concussed student-athletes as part of the university’s concussion protocol, and by providing office hours at the university’s athletic center for coaches and athletes to seek mental health and or sport psychology consultations.

Dr. von Stietz also discussed the sport psychology services he provides to teams at Whittier College such as providing team building sessions. The event included experiential components such as when Dr. von Stietz led those in attendance through a team building exercise in which participants stacked hexnuts on their side using only a chopstick. Although the activity sounds simple, it required participants to practice teamwork and focusing under pressure.
