  • Invictus IGTV: Dr. Jason von Stietz discusses sport psychology on Instagram TV with WPSL head coach

CBT SoCal’s Dr. Jason von Stietz recently appeared on the IGTV channel of Invictus AC Feminae, a Women’s Premiere Soccer League (WPSL) team located in the South Bay. He was interviewed by the WPSL team’s head coach, Coach Aaron Rodriguez. Dr. von Stietz and Coach Rodriguez discussed a wide variety of issues including Dr. von Stietz’s history in sport psychology, which includes working with athletes at the Major League Baseball Youth Academy in Compton, Los Angeles Valley College, as well as Whittier College.

How do you develop a pregame routine?

Dr. von Stietz and Coach Rodriguez discussed a variety of issues related to sport psychology. For example, they discussed the topic of how athletes can deal with anxiety before a game. Many athletes deal with anxiety, often times very intense anxiety, before a game. Dr. von Stietz discussed the importance of each individual athlete developing a pregame routine. This pregame routine would need to be different for each athlete. Some athletes compete best if they joke and socialize with teammates before a game. On the other hand, some athletes perform best when they separate themselves from their teammates and use their earbuds to quietly listen to music. Each individual must learn what works best for them through trial, error, and objectively evaluating their results. It is important that each teammate give one another space to allow each other to do what works best for them without being disrupted. It is also important that teammates also allow space in their individual pregame routine for a team ritual that helps to build team cohesion before the game. Many teams opt for a team prayer or a chant.

Dr. von Stietz also answered questions from viewers related to insomnia, peer pressure, hypochondria, as well as other topics.
